New School Year - New Opportunity to Volunteer at Corinth
Welcome back to DragonDads 2010-11. Last year was a great success, and we're looking to grow the program this year and include new guys. We're sending out an email to everyone today. Please contact me if I can answer any questions. See you at Corinth!

Field Day - a great chance to volunteer at Corinth
Field Day is coming soon at Corinth, and P.E. teacher Nancy Flaspohler is looking for volunteers to help staff the events. So far, we have about 22 guys signed up. If you'd be available to help out either May 20th (if you have a kindergartener) or May 21st (morning session for 4-5th graders), it would be great. We need about 6 guys for each session. It's a fun way to help Corinth. Please contact Ken Emley for details on signing up.

School Funding + Parental Involvement = Better Schools
DragonDad John Schutt sent this link along about school funding. It's certainly relevant to all of us at Corith. Please get involved and contribute your voice to the dialog.

December update....
When the kids break for the holidays, DragonDads will have had 15 participants already and a total of 64 volunteer hours at Corinth. That's fantastic! Dr. Emley reports good feedback from the teachers who have had a DragonDad in class. There is usally plenty to do, and we thank the teachers for being so helpful and prepared for the guys. One cool thing is Dr. Emley has created a DragonDads button for both the guys and the kids to wear that day. Kind of neat way to identify the program.
You can help by spreading the word about DragonDads. There's lots of opportunities the rest of the school year to get involved. Thanks for helping your kids and Corinth!

Prize-winning author Peg Tyre comments on DragonDads...

Noted author and mother of 2 school-age boys Peg Tyre presented her findings about boys and education here in KC last November. Her book The Trouble With Boys (2008) was a NY Times Best Seller, and is absolutely fascinating. Peg was kind enough to send us a note about programs like DragonDads:
"Too many students, and especially school-aged boys, think that school is for girls. Why do they think that? They see very few men involved in the educational process. Their teachers, bless them, are usually female. Moms drop them off, moms go to the PTA meetings, Moms help with homework. Getting more men in schools -- especially through programs like Dragon Dads, is a solid first step to reversing the the pervasive under-achievement of boys and to making sure our schools help all kids succeed."
